How many workers do I need to run a fertilizer plant? (Labor Configuration Guide)

This is one of the most important questions for new plant owners. The exact number of workers you need is not a fixed figure; it depends entirely on your automation level (manual, semi-automatic, or fully automatic) and your capacity (T/H).

To help you calculate your labor costs accurately, we have broken down the required workers into 4 Core Stations:

Station 1: Raw Material Feeding

  • Semi-Auto Line: 1-2 workers operating the loader or shoveling raw materials into the hoppers.

  • Fully Auto Line: 0 workers (driven by automatic feeding systems).

Station 2: Batching & Mixing Control 

  • Semi-Auto Line: 1 worker (weighing ingredients manually or operating a simple control panel).

  • Fully Auto Line: 1 operator (monitoring the PLC screen).

Station 3: Packaging & Bagging 

  • Semi-Auto Line: 2-3 workers (holding bags, sealing, and moving bags).

  • Fully Auto Line: 1 operator (supervising the automatic bagging machine).

Station 4: Transport & Stacking 

  • Semi-Auto Line: 2-4 workers (manually moving bags to the warehouse or onto trucks).

  • Fully Auto Line: 1 forklift driver (using our optional truck loading conveyors).

Estimated Total Worker Breakdown by Capacity:

  • 5 T/H to 10 T/H (Small Plant): Semi-Auto: 6 to 8 workers per shift. Fully Auto: 2 to 3 workers per shift.

  • 20 T/H to 30 T/H (Medium Plant): Semi-Auto: 8 to 12 workers per shift. Fully Auto: 3 to 4 workers per shift.

  • 40 T/H to 80 T/H (Large Dynamic Blending Line): Because the equipment is larger and materials move faster, manual labor costs increase significantly. A semi-auto line requires 12 to 15 workers per shift to manage the higher volume. However, we highly recommend our fully automatic system, which requires only 4 to 6 operators per shift to run the entire plant with maximum efficiency.

Our Advice:
If your local labor costs are low, a semi-automatic line is the best starting point. If your labor costs are high, investing in full automation will pay for itself within the first year.
