The fertilization of Chinese Wolfberry
The annual growth period of Chinese wolfberry isfrom mid-March to early November. Each growth process will consume a lot of nutrients so that the fertilizer period is long. Fertilization can create a good environment for the wolfberry growth.
The types and periods of fertilization: About production, fertilization can be divided into basal and top dressing. Base fertilizer mainly composed by farm manure-based, and sometimes supplemented by chemical fertilizers. Farm manure mainly composed by sheep manure, cattle and horses circle feces, oil residue (cake) and manure and so on. Farm manure can not only
improve the soil quality and fertility, it is also good complete fertilizer which can supply various needed nutrients for the growth of Chinese wolfberry.
Base fertilizer to autumn is good, people always apply base fertilizer on October of every. If the autumn fertilizer is too late, it should be applied in the next spring which can also add part of quick fertilizer to promote fertilizer fermentation.
Top dressing means that applying quick fertilizer when the Chinese wolfberry in the fruit period. It is mainly composed by quick-acting fertilizer, supplemented by manure. For fertilizer, nitrogen fertilizer mainly contain urea, ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate and ammonium bicarbonate; phosphate fertilizer is composed by calcium phosphate, superphosphate, etc. the main content of potassium fertilizer are potassium sulfate, potassium chloride and so on. There are also nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium ternary compound fertilizer, ammonium phosphate and potassium dihydrogen phosphate binary fertilizer, etc. All of these fertilizer are good for wolfberry growth.
The wolfberry applied nitrogen fertilizer has high yield. The study shows that the application of potash and nitrogen fertilizer could promote the uptake of soil nutrient by wolfberry tree, and the potash fertilizer was also beneficial to the growth and development of the wolfberry tree. Potash test also shows that potassium is necessary for wolfberry leaves growth.
Wolfberry need different fertilizer in different period. In the period of bud to flower, nitrogen fertilizer is necessary. In the period of bud differentiation and foliage, with use of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer is necessary.
Top dressing should be based on the tree growth. Late April to early May is the period of new wolfberry leaves growth and the formation of old buds so that we need to apply top dressing fertilizer which mainly composed by urea and right amount of phosphate; Early June to the end of July is the period of bud formation and fruit growth so that adequate nitrogen, phosphorus, potash fertilizer are necessary. In addition, if there are more new branches of wolfberry on the early August or there are many buds, in order to promote the growth of autumn fruit, we need to chase nitrogen and phosphorus potash fertilizer.
In order to alleviate the contradiction between the lack of nutrients in the tree, starting from the beginning of June, in the whole flower and fruit period, we should have top dresing every 15-20 days for a leaf top which is beneficial for the preservation of fruit and improvement of the yield.
Fertilizer amount: the amount of fertilizer for wolfberry should be based on the size of the canopy, the condition of the growth and soil properties. The general amount of fertilizer for big trees, weak trees is more than small trees, strong trees. Due to the growth of Chinese wolfberry fruit need a long period of time, supplying plenty of fertilizer will be more favorable for growth and easy to get high yield, stable production.
Fertilization method: ring groove, 
semi-ring ditch and strip ditch application.
Dug and apply the base fertilizer, then mix the fertilizer with soil well, and finally coverthe soil.
Root top dressing: points or ditch fertilization, that is, under the edge of the canopy, dig 3-4 hole on both sides of the canopy, apply the quick-acting nitrogen, potash fertilizer or NPK compound fertilizer, and then cover soil on it. Irrigation after fertilization, so that make the roots absorb more fertilizer.
Phosphate (calcium phosphate, bone meal, etc.) is easily have a chemical reaction with iron and calcium so that lead to soil curing. Therefore, apply phosphate fertilizer before wolfberry need it, or put fertilizer into organic fertilizer to increase its solubility and root absorption. Foliar top dressing, also called foliar spray fertilizer. This method is simple, with less fertilizer and some fertilizer (urea, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, etc.) can be mixed with pesticides, saving labor and reduce costs.
Spraying method: the nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium three elements of fertilizer dubbed 0.5% of the water immersion, sprayed on the canopy. Foliage spray time is best selected in the cloudy day or in the sunny morning before the 2 clock and after 4 o’clock, can not spray at noon to reduce the evaporation of foliage and easy for fully absorb of the foliage. Not spray when it is rain day because of severe leaching.
